Don Muleme, a Ugandan immigrant in his mid-to-late 30s, appeared Monday morning in Waltham District Court, where he was arraigned on charges that include assault and battery, as well as alleged violations related to an existing probation and his driver’s license.

Mr. Muleme was brought into the courtroom at approximately 10:25 a.m., escorted by court security officers from a holding area below the courtroom. He was restrained at the waist, wrists and ankles and wore a blue correctional uniform as he stood before Judge Ellen Caulo.

Prosecutors outlined the charges and told the court they had obtained video evidence allegedly showing a stabbing. They also cited the presence of blood on Mr. Muleme’s hands and on a jacket recovered at the scene. The victim, identified by the prosecution as a woman, was described as uncooperative during the investigation.

Judge Caulo denied bail and ordered Mr. Muleme held pending further proceedings.

When asked whether he wished to hire private counsel or receive a court-appointed attorney, Mr. Muleme responded that he wanted an attorney appointed to represent him.

“You will have no contact with the victim while this case is pending,” Judge Caulo told him.

Mr. Muleme was arrested on Sunday, Dec. 28, following the incident in the city of Waltham. The court said proceedings will continue on working court days via Zoom until legal representation is secured.

As the hearing concluded, Mr. Muleme briefly acknowledged members of the audience. Among those present was Sylvia Balente, who is currently caring for his daughter.

“I believe Muleme has an alcohol addiction and requires urgent help,” Ms. Balente said after the hearing.

Further court dates are expected once counsel is appointed.
